The most stressful part of a photo shoot is deciding what to wear! In this blog post I’ll walk you through some of the DOs and DON’Ts of preparing for the engagement session.

General tips:

  • Clean your ring. Make it sparkle!
  • Clothes. In a normal session we will have time for two outfits. If you decide to bring a change of clothes, I recommend bringing one casual outfit and one fancy outfit. Depending on which location you choose, and whether or not there are bathrooms available, you might end up changing in the car!
  • Comfy shoes. If you want to be photographed in fancy shoes, consider bringing a pair of tennis shoes that you can toss on while we walk from location to location.
  • Parking fee. It might not apply to our shoot, but it’s better to be prepared. Keep some cash on hand in case of cash-only parking fees.

Bright + Bold recipe
1. Only one wears a pattern
2. Bold, solid colored Backgrounds
3. One person wears a bold color. The other person wears neutral colors.

Romantic recipe
1. Neutral colors (Blushes, tans, light pinks, faint blues and light greys)
2. Long, Flowy Skirts/Dresses
3. Suit (or khakis instead of jeans)

A few more tips…

DON’Ts

  • Colors to avoid: bright reds, neons, strong oranges (they reflect color onto skin and can be difficult to edit!)
  • Avoid patterns smaller than a quarter. These tiny patterns don’t record well on camera. Men’s checkered shirts are fine if the “checks” are on the larger side.
  • Other things to avoid: Tennis shoes, graphic tees, bold logos, sunglasses + baseball hats.

DOs

  • Match style. If one of you dresses up, the other should also dress to that level of fanciness. Casual = casual. Formal = formal.
  • Alternate heaviness. If one of you wears dark jeans, the other could wear light colored pants. This helps your images look more balanced.
  • SMILE. You are in good hands…I’ll be coaching you through the entire thing! And, since you’ll be dressed up, plan on going to dinner together after your session!

Above all…wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. And get excited! Your session is going to be so much fun!
